The following biography is from the archives of askART.
Historian and portrait painter. As the son of a less well-positioned cabinetmaker, Friedrich had to put his artistic talent into service at an early age. Called by Georg V to Hannover, Kaulbach worked as a Hanoverian court painter and professor at the Technical University of Hannover. He has received numerous awards for his oeuvre, which also includes some large-format and multi-figured history paintings. He was considered a very popular portrait painter, who received numerous orders in this area. Even in France and England, especially in aristocratic circles, he was regarded as a coveted portraitist. Among his outstanding achievements is the large picture of the Hanoverian royal family from 1858. His own portrait, painted by his son, hangs in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
