Biography from Auctionata
Gotthardt Kuehl was born in Lübeck and became one of the earliest representatives of Impressionism in Germany. He started his artistic training at the academy in Dresden in 1867, followed by further education at the academy in Munich, since 1870. Kuehl then spent 10 years in Paris, where he was introduced to the Impressionist style. In Holland, Kuehl also came across the German artist Max Liebermann, whose paintings were another source of inspiration for him. In 1892, both artists were involved at the foundation of the Munich Secession.
In 1893, Kuehl was appointed professor at the art academy in Dresden and took over the class of genre painting. Among his students were renowned artists such as Paul Wilhelm, Max Ackermann and Josef Hegenbart. Paintings of the artist are now presented, for instance, at the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden, at the Behnhaus in Lübeck and at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. (cbo)
